Fine artist Louise Cutler’s latest exhibit, “We Are Still Watching,” is set to open at the Tointon Gallery from January 19 - February 23, 2024, Open Artist Reception Friday February 3rd 5-7pm, Greeley Co.

“We Are Still Watching” is a figurative representation of individuals of the past who surround us in a unique way, explains Cutler. “It means that we ought to act as if they are still watching to remind us to continue the fight for rights, justice and freedoms. By remembering our past struggles as human beings, we can build a better future. I created ‘We Are Watching’ with a desire to research the stories I did not learn about in school. I started out just researching missing pieces of my Black American History, however it expanded to the Women's Suffrage movement, the Holocaust, the plight of Native Americans, and so on.  I processed my findings through my writings and visual art. The exhibit continues to evolve as I talk with individuals of all races who also have felt silted by the American education system. So I add as I learn about other peoples and events that may have been overlooked in our history books.”

Fort Collins Symphony and Artist Louise Cutler Commemorate Florence Price's Legacy with ‘Ethiopia’s Shadow in America’ Premiere  at its “Dvo?ák Discovery” concert at 7:30 p.m. MST on Saturday, February 3, 2024, in-person at the Lincoln Center and via live-stream.

 The Fort Collins Symphony (FCS) will perform the Colorado premiere of Florence Price’s Ethiopia’s Shadow in America at the concert. In a unique collaboration with artist Louise Cutler, the concert will also feature the unveiling of a new painting inspired by the music. 

Following the performance, Cutler’s painting will be up for auction to benefit the symphony’s Open Notes Program, which provides free tickets and educational programs to underserved populations in Fort Collins.

Florence Price broke barriers as the first Black woman to have her music performed by a major American orchestra, the Chicago Symphony. But despite her achievements, Price faced prejudice and discrimination through her life because of both her gender and the color of her skin. After her death in 1953, Price and her music were lost and forgotten until a collection of her unpublished manuscripts was discovered in 2009. Among those manuscripts was Ethiopia’s Shadow in America, composed in 1932 but not performed for the first time until 2015, a staggering 83 years after its composition.

In response to this significant performance and Price’s enduring legacy, artist Louise Cutler created a new painting inspired byEthiopia’s Shadow in America.
